Karnataka is a large state, so some long drives are inevitable. Today’s journey to Hospet takes around 7 hours, passing through charming small towns and rural landscapes. Due to limited accommodation in Hampi, most travellers stay in Hospet or nearby Anegundi. Overnight stay in Hospet.
The must-visit archaeological site of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is best experienced over at least two days. Once the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire, Hampi is now a surreal town with remnants of ancient temples, stepwells, elephant stables, bazaars, and palaces scattered across a boulder-strewn landscape. You can explore these areas by auto-rickshaw, bicycle, or on foot. A sunrise view from Matanga Hill or Hemakuta Hill is highly recommended for its magical ambience. Later, return to the hotel and spend the night.
Drive north towards Badami, stopping to explore the early Chalukya capitals, known for their contributions to temple architecture. Badami itself, flourishing between the 4th and 8th centuries CE, is renowned for its rock-cut cave temples carved into sandstone cliffs, featuring intricate sculptures and shrines. Overnight stay in Badam.
Spend a full day exploring this historically rich area — Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal are ideal for on-foot exploration and collectively form the cradle of Chalukya temple architecture, offering a mix of Dravidian and Nagara styles. These sites are now recognised as part of India’s early architectural marvels. Overnight stay in Badami.
After breakfast, leave for Goa, also known as “Rome of the East.” It is best known for its scenic beauty and the architectural splendour of its temples, churches, and old houses. On arrival, check in to the hotel and spend the rest of your day at leisure. Overnight stay in the hotel.
